Germany’s gaming audience isn’t just big - it’s surprisingly diverse. We’ve collected the main numbers, audience breakdown, platform split, and current trends in one easy overview.
General Information
Germany (German: Deutschland), officially the Federal Republic of Germany, is a country in Central Europe with its capital in Berlin.
The national currency is the euro. The national internet domain is .de. The official language is German, one of the Germanic languages, which has numerous dialects within Germany itself.
Germany’s GDP volume in 2024 amounted to USD 5.7 trillion (about USD 69,230 per capita). As a global leader in several industrial and technological sectors, Germany is the world’s third‑largest exporter and importer of goods. Germany is a developed country with a very high standard of living (6th place in the global ranking). It maintains a social security system and universal healthcare, environmental protection policies, and tuition-free higher education (although about 50% of students in physics, mathematics, and chemistry specialties ultimately do not complete their studies, primarily due to weak academic performance).
In 2020, the country ranked 4th after Japan in R&D expenditure (PPP). Germany placed 3rd in the Nature Index ranking and 9th in the Global Innovation Index ranking for 2024. The country hosts eight of the world’s top 100 science-and-technology clusters, with Munich and Cologne among the strongest.
Germany is one of the founding members and a member of the European Union and the OECD, a member of NATO, and part of the Group of Seven (G7).

Gaming Market
Market Analytics and Trends
Germany‘s gaming segment is showing steady, albeit moderate, growth. Several factors are driving this trend: changing audience expectations, the rapid rise of mobile gaming, and growing investments in game development. Together, these elements shape the current landscape of the industry.
Consumer Preferences
German players are increasingly drawn to deep, immersive game worlds and projects that allow communication and interaction with others. The spread of streaming services and esports is changing audience habits: younger players are especially attracted to interactive content that lets them participate in events rather than simply watch them.
At the same time, there is a growing interest in diverse narratives and broader representation of different social groups in games. This reflects broader social trends toward inclusivity and cultural sensitivity, which directly influence how modern games are created and marketed.
Market Trends
Among the key trends is the rising interest in virtual and augmented reality, which give players a stronger sense of presence. Mobile games continue to attract a huge audience, especially among young people who value convenience and the ability to play anytime.
Social mechanics in multiplayer games are becoming increasingly important, strengthening communities and encouraging shared gameplay experiences. To stay competitive, developers are forced to actively adopt new technologies and pay close attention to narrative diversity.
Local Specifics
The German games market is strongly influenced by strict data protection regulations, which directly affect development and marketing practices. In addition, interest in games with local cultural context remains high, creating demand for projects with German stories and aesthetics.
Germany‘s strong position in STEM education supports the development of the technology sector and fosters innovation in game design. As a result, the market is shaped around high‑quality products, responsible approaches to gameplay, and support for an active community of players and creators.
Macroeconomic Factors
Germany‘s gaming industry is developing against the backdrop of a stable economy, high purchasing power, and rapid technological progress. Income levels allow many consumers to invest in games, subscriptions, and gaming services.
Government support for innovation and funding for tech startups encourage the emergence of new developers and cutting‑edge technologies. Global trends—such as the growth of esports and the spread of mobile gaming—also influence the market, intensifying competition and pushing companies toward collaboration.
Favorable tax policies and support programs for creative industries create conditions for further growth of Germany‘s gaming sector.

Six out of ten residents of Germany aged 6 to 69 play computer and video games. According to the Der deutschen Games‑Branche report, the number of players has increased by 9% since 2020. Games are equally popular among both younger and older age groups.
The segment of players over 60 is developing especially dynamically: in 2024, their number grew from 6.4 to 7.7 million. On one hand, this is due to many players remaining loyal to the hobby for decades; on the other, an increasing number of older people are rediscovering the pleasure of computer and video games. The average age of German players has reached 39.5 years for the first time (a year earlier it was 38.2). Overall, 8 out of 10 gamers in Germany are over 18.
There is also great diversity in platform usage. According to the Der deutschen Games‑Branche report, the most common gaming device in Germany remains the smartphone, used by about 22.9 million players. Its success as a gaming platform has remained stable for many years.
Gaming consoles rank second in popularity after smartphones. In 2024, about 20.5 million Germans played on consoles—more than ever before (18.7 million the previous year). Over recent years, console gaming has shown strong growth: compared with 2019, the number of console players in Germany has increased by 29%. This has been driven by the high popularity of the current console generation—Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox—alongside new technically improved versions and compatible accessories released in recent years.
At the same time, the number of PC gamers has declined. In 2024, 13.1 million people played on PC in Germany—400,000 fewer than the year before. This continues a downward trend over the last few years: compared with 2019, when Germany had 16.3 million PC gamers, the decline is 20%.
Tablet gaming has become more popular by 2024: the number of tablet players increased by 300,000 to 10.3 million. However, many Germans do not limit themselves to a single platform: around 19 million players use two or more platforms for gaming.
The top 20 best‑selling new games of 2024 in official game charts show which titles and genres are particularly popular among Germans. EA SPORTS FC 25 by Electronic Arts took first place on both PC and consoles. This popular football simulator has consistently held leading positions in Germany’s monthly charts since its release at the end of September 2024. In second place in 2024, thanks to strong sales, is the first‑person shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 (Activision Blizzard). Third place among the year’s most successful games goes to the cooperative third‑person shooter Helldivers 2 (Sony Interactive Entertainment). Farming Simulator 25 (GIANTS Software) ranks fourth in the annual ranking. Super Mario Party Jamboree (Nintendo) rounds out the top five most popular new games.
