Everyone's talking about ecology, from activists to royals. Our company is no exception—we're committed to a robust environmental policy. Let's look at some easy steps you can take to start building an eco-friendly company with your team.
Organize Separate Waste Collection in the Office
Offices generate a lot of recyclable waste: paper, tea bag packaging, milk cartons, batteries, etc. Instead of dumping everything into one bin, set up special containers for different types of waste. Hold a workshop for employees on sorting recyclables and how to send them for recycling.
We partner with Čepom do osmeha in Novi Sad to recycle various materials. This approach not only conserves resources but also inspires employees to join the environmental movement. After all, we’re only humans, and people tend to adopt the habits of those around them.
Switch to Electronic Document Management
No paper bureaucracy in your company? Congratulations: you are not only saving time and money, but also saving forests from being cut down!
In 2020, we gave up paper in the office and switched to electronic document management. The economic benefits include saving on stationery and postage. More importantly, it reduces paper use and its environmental impact.
Before the change, we used to order 16 packages of paper (8,000 sheets) annually. According to Conservatree, it takes about 24 trees to produce a ton of paper. By eliminating 8,000 sheets each year, we save about one tree annually. Since 2020, we’ve saved approximately four trees. This is our small contribution to reducing deforestation—but small changes can make big differences!
Participate in Environmental Activities
Join existing environmental initiatives as a volunteer or financially support organizations. You can also organize your own events. For example, we have our long-standing annual eco-picnic. Every autumn, employees and their families come to a popular recreation area and perform a cleanup. Once we’re finished, we play in the fresh air and reward ourselves with a barbecue and socializing. It’s a fun team-building activity that makes the world a little cleaner.
Involving family and friends in these events raises awareness and engagement. When employees bring loved ones, it attracts more people to environmental issues. Kids, especially, learn by seeing the benefits in action, potentially passing these traditions down through generations.
If you don’t believe it, look at our experience. How many kids do you count in the picture? :)
Hold Workshops
Calls to protect nature may not excite employees, but workshops can. Organize them in the office during breaks or weekends. Workshops allow hands-on learning and provide useful information. Topics can include trash sorting, types of plastic, conscious consumption, plant care, and creating items from eco-friendly materials.
We held a plant transplanting workshop that extended the life of our office plants and created a green corner for everyone to enjoy.
Help Animals
Animal shelters exist in every major city. Help them out with money, food, or old items for bedding. Shelters also appreciate volunteers to walk the animals. If you’re not afraid of more responsibility, adopt a stray animal, take it to the vet, and care for it. That’s how we got our office cat, June, whose story is on our Instagram.
Training
Knowledge is power. To educate colleagues on making their lives more eco-friendly, start a corporate eco-chat for discussions and tips, or send regular newsletters with useful information. Choose methods that are convenient for most employees.
What’s all this for?
The planet’s future depends on individual actions, however small. Why not start now, alone or together?
